The Other Side of Summer, 2026
This piece was painted towards the end of summer, shortly after my teenage daughter returned from a month at summer camp in Estes Park, a place where I spent some of my favorite summers as a child myself. At fifteen, she is becoming increasingly independent. She is strong, determined, curious. There is a particular tenderness in watching a child move beyond the version of childhood where they need you for everything. This quiet mountain landscape is infused with a mix of pride, melancholy, love, and release. Summer is ending, but all endings are also beginnings. Sometimes the work of loving someone is allowing them the space to become wholly themselves.
