Listening, 2026
I painted this piece over a year ago. Inspired by a photograph I took during Rockygrass, an annual bluegrass festival in Lyons, Colorado. I was never quite happy with it, so a few months ago, I painted over the parts I didn’t like. I keep thinking it’s going to get easier, creating. It never does, it just...evolves. Such is art. I go in with a plan, and more often than not, that painting has its own ideas about what it wants to become. I’ve come to realize that it’s a collaboration between me and what I’m creating. And if either of us, me or the paints + canvas, aren’t willing to hear what the other has to say, the painting often doesn’t work. So I’m working on listening more. And controlling less.
